Easter Baby

This year's early Easter coincided with Baby's third birthday, which gave us the opportunity to see family and to organise a small first party in our new house (more on the new house later, we're still feeling our way around it, but gosh, is it nice to have your own place at last!)
Baby J could not have been happier with her birthday. I saw lots of hanging balloons on Pinterest lately and tried it the night before the big day - man, the look on her face when she saw them in the morning was priceless, I have never seen that look of amazement on her before, like "really, all this for me?" Then presents, then grandparents arriving without her knowing, then a whole day at London zoo, and then my delicious but not very "together" pecan cake (Delia's recipe here), wow, what a day for our big girl. And what proud, happy parents she makes us.

DIY tips
♥ For the balloons, I used some simple masking tape and raffia ribbons, we're lucky to have the right kind of skylight to hand them on to, but Pinterest has loads of ideas for balloons hanging off doorframes etc too.
♥ The cake really was nice, honest, especially the caramelised pecans and mascarpone cream BUT do not let a three-year-old dictate the decoration of said cake, stick to Delia's, or wait until the very last minute to add your hundreds and thousands!

hello autumn

My favourite season is here! We have been busy with making lots and lots projects for our new house but it's a bit like a rollercoaster ride and we're still not quite there yet. I get the impression that I've been saying "next month hopefully" for a looooong time now when people ask me when we're moving in. Today I'd give you the exact same answer if you asked me. So fingers crossed for November, hey?
So with nowhere but good old London to be, we've spent the first few weeks of Autumn going for walks and baking. The filo dish above is  a Moroccan inspired lamb swirl, delicious served with yogurt, fresh pomegranate and pistachio. But what about crafts I hear you say? Friends, I have serious catching up to do. I made a couple of tiny things for my excited toddler, but I am ashamed to say I have not tackled the big bad 2 remaining curtains for my bedroom yet. Who could blame me though, I mean: This is England, Downton Abbey, Fargo, The Returned, Homeland, TV has not been this good in ages. I absolutely adored the latest (hopefully not last) instalment of This is England, so poignant and just series after series. Never have I sobbed so much while watching a TV programme - have you felt the same about it?

This is England, Downton Abbey, Fargo, The Returned, Homeland. J'ai complètement adoré la dernière série de This is England, si juste et toujours à vif, je n'ai jamais pleuré à sanglots comme ca auparavant devant ma télé - vous l'avez ressenti comment vous?

little pleasures

Life is complicated enough, so I'm trying not to overcomplicate mine this Autumn. One thing I am doing though, is trying out a few of the recipes featured on the Great British Bake Off. Obviously, I've had to draw the line somewhere - Victorian fowl pies? nope. Madeira cake and proofing-free bread? Most definitely. The Padron peppers are from Waitrose, and have nothing to do with the Bake Off, but I was so happy to find them in an English supermarket!

Last weekend I took Baby to see her first fair, which she loved, right down to the eurotrash songs blasting out of the speakers. Cute - in a cringy sort of way. The fair always comes to town this time of year, and I guess before we know it, Baby J will be big enough to go on the rides all by herself for the first time. I'm realising we are in a real transitinal phase at the moment, full of first times and last times. A bit like the autumnal season itself I guess: last time you wear your summer dress, first time you put the heating on, that sort of thing.

back home

So I went "back home" this summer, back to where time slows down, where lunches and dinners have no end, butterflies happily go from one flower to the next, where it is so hot you have to close the shutters during the day otherwise the house becomes a steam room. Back home where you sort of know everything and everyone but not really, because you left so long ago, and your life is drastically, completely different from that of the locals. Back home where the thought of a nice cappuccino with soy milk is just that - a thought. Back home where the most exciting event in the week is a trip to the local supermarket. Back home where one of us had a blast in the swimming pool and in the open air(the peak excitement for baby was seeing the tractors and/or cows everyday) and one of us focused on their tan and getting as many goodies as would fit in the bag on the way back (that's me, I did a good job of it and hope to show you in the coming days).
And now we're here. Back Home. No home-grown strawberries or tomatoes here, but everything that Baby loves and missed: her toys and cuddly friends, her books, her bed, her trike. Back home where frothy coffees are the norm. Back home where we belong. It's good to be back.

sweet toddler days

Our sweet toddler days are filled with painting, strawberries, and Miyazake movies at the moment. There is not a dull moment in the house, or in the park, or anywhere we go with her. She is simply amazing. She is finally beginning to piece sentences together and it's music to our ears when she says things like "I like this one" or "Doggy's sleeping in bed now".
I love it how she likes to help in the kitchen, she never misses an opportunity to get her hands stuck in - literally! Her favourite is mixing the batter.
There is no limit to how much she can empty and fill things all over again. Tupperwares have never been so used in the house. Buttons are still a big favourite, they go from one bowl straight into the over, and then end up all over the floor. I must have swallowed at least 50 with the hoover over the last year. Bless. I wouldn't have it any other way really.
