Staycation

For the first time in many many years, we have decided to take it easy on ourselves this year and stay in the UK for the summer holidays. No airport, ferries, million suitcases and endless baby paraphernalia to pack and unpack. And oh joy, so far it has been probably the nicest British summer, so it's been a pleasure. From our little holiday villa we have enjoyed endless barbecue nights, a little bit of bubbly to celebrate two years of married life, and the most amazing fresh air and sweet sunrises. Baby has taken her first steps in the swimming pool and likes it, she laughs as she splashes around and is astonished at all the others kids around and how confident and playful they are. She would like to join in, and very time I think we have taken the right to put her in nursery, she's so sociable and happy to meet new people. It's truly a pleasure to watch our daughter grow, smile, be surprised, touch flowers with the very tip of her fingers, and have long baby-speak conversations with herself. Our baby.

A bientot..

nap projects

So here we are, one week into the summer holidays. I wish I could tell you what a good time I've had already, and show you a tonne of things I've already made. Alas, I would have, if not for the dreaded chicken pox. Let me tell you, I've never seen my lovely Baby J so miserable. Of course, I mostly blame the mini heatwave we've been having at the same time. As if dozens of itchy spots weren't enough, we've had the warmest weather of the year so far. Nights were sticky, days were just hot, altogether it's just been awful. Still, before and after that mini-disaster, one managed to rustle up a few things during Baby's nap...a much appreciated pause in our days.
This funky chai and spiced rum tiramisu has proved to be a hit - the man of the house even went as far as to say I could make it again another time! I made two cushion covers for my mother-in-law, and I tried to make Baby a summery sleeping bag to try and cope with the heat. We enjoyed a lovely couple of hours at a lavender farm nearby, the smell and views were out of this world.
The worst is behind us now, and hopefully baby and I can start to properly get on with our holiday. On my programme, a visit to the butterfly exhibition at the Science Museum (if it's good enough for Prince George, it's good enough for us!), sewing of course, picnics maybe? And much less glamorous things like tidying under my bed, in my cupboards, and cleaning the fridge properly. Pottering around, as my colleagues would say.

calorie factory

A couple of weeks ago Mr Yummy and I spend an evening in Casa Caldesi in Marylebone learning how to make delicious Napolitan dishes, and gained a couple of kilos each in the process. We had a blast, though, and as they say, when in Rome...
On the menu were ham croquettes filled with smoked cheese, fried mozzarella and anchovy sandwiches, pizza with Naples-style dough, sea bream in hot chilli sauce, tomato and mozzarella salad and torta caprese for dessert.
If you're a budding cook and fancy a nice cooking course, I'd thoroughly recommend a visit to Casa Caldesi, the no-nonsense chef was cracking, and it's great that we all sit down at the end of the course, relax with a glass of wine (or two) and share the lovely meal we've just prepared.
