3 things to smile about #5

This time of year nothing makes me smile more than preparing for Christmas - well, it's only just around the corner isn't it? And before that, there's the advent calendars to think about, of course.
I've gone a bit mental with my advent calendar boxes business in the past three or four years, and although I am sure I'll come back to it, this year sadly, I'm not making any apart than for close family. The truth is, I've left it all a bit too late to get organised on that scale, and in any case it's good to leave things to rest sometimes. So one of the best things at the moment is browsing for my own advent calendar, and there is so much choice out there, it'll be hard to pick one.
 Carrying on with traditions, this year I will definitely be doing is homemade stocking fillers. So here are some of the easiest, lovely things that make me smile.

First up is the old classic - lavender bags. The is a really easy one to make, and a crowd pleaser, because you can always use a lavender bag to bung in a drawer or in the car for that extra fresh smell of Provence! I order my lavender online from the good people of Amazon, and any old bits of scraps will do for your fabric. That said, this series of fabric above is perfect as you can just cut up around one of the adverts.

Next up is great for little people, and although it's a bit fiddly it's a rewarding one. I make my life easier with this one by not turning any of the fabric over, I just shear it after sewing. You do need to get some small magnets, but again, my Amazonian friends are very resourceful on this one.

Finally, handwarmers. Who doesn't curse the cold when they go out on a cold morning? Those are so easy to make, and they're a cool, natural alternative to the ones sold in the shops for a fiver. You'll probably use them longer too. My one and only trick is to double-sew the edges if you're using rice like me. It just ensures your grains stay where they should, and don't end up in the bottom of your coat pockets!

log cabin cushions

 

I made this series of log cabin cushions a few weeks ago, using fabric I had stashed away for a couple of years. It seemed like the right thing to do with it.
I fear we might tire of the spotty pattern and owls quite soon, but for the meantime they will do just fine!

J'ai fait cette série de coussins il y a quelques semaines, avec du tissu que j'avais depuis pas mal de temps. Ca m'a semblé etre le projet ideal pour enfin m'en servir.
J'ai bien peur qu'on se lasse des pois et des chouettes assez vite, mais pour l'instant ca ira comme ca!

early March

 

Watching my daffodils open a little bit more everyday. Getting ready to redo my cushions for the lounge - I bought this lovely pack of fabrics at the Country Living fair a year or so ago, and had it squirreled away for just the right job. Making teacup candles- you can see my first one here, with vanilla scent but not too happy about its overall look. I made a new batch of them today, but I'm waiting for the wax to dry and see if there's an improvement. I found the lovely cups in my local charity shop, and the wax and co online. It made a good surprise present for my mother in law's Mother's Day present. As for me, I got the best present in the shape of a painting from Baby's nursery, and Mr Lavender has been full of lovely little attentions all weekend long. Bliss.
The other day it rained in the afternoon and then the sun came out just as the day was about to end. We had the heating on, dinner was in the oven, we were totally snug in our little home and for a moment watching out the window into the beautiful sunset lights, everything was just perfect, just right the way it should be.

Regarder mes jonquilles s'ouvrir un peu plus chaque jour. Se préparer a refaire les coussins du salon - j'avais acheté ce tissue adorable il y a un moment au salon de Country Living et attendais l'occasion idéale de m'en servir. Faire des bougies dans de vieilles tasses à thé - ici c'est ma premiere, parfumée à la vanille, mais je ne suis pas entièrement satisfaite du résultat. J'en ai fait de nouvelles aujourd'hui, mais j'attends que la cire sèche pour voir si ma technique s'est ameliorée. J'ai trouvé les tasses dans le magasin des bonnes oeuvres du coin, et le reste sur Internet. Ca a fait un joi petit cadeau surprise pour ma belle-mère pour la fête des mères (qui se fête en mars ici!). Quant à moi, j'ai reçu le plus beau des cadeaux de la part de la crèche Bébé, un super tableau, et Mr Lavande a été aux petits soins tout le weekend. Un vrai rêve.
L'autre jour il a plu dans l'apres-midi et puis le soleil est sorti juste avant qu'il ne se couche. On avait le chauffage, le diner cuisait au four, on était completement cosy dans notre petit chez-nous et pendant un instant en regardant le joli coucher de soleil par la fenêtre, tout était parfait, juste à sa place.

Big Christmas project # 1

 

This year my countdown to the big C started ages ago when I started packing, and packing, and packing yet more little presents for my advent boxes.
I have done those boxes for family members last year and they proved to be a big success. Early in the Autumn I started taking a good look around the shops, sniffed out some bargains, imported things from my native France, and here it is, finally....my 2014 edition of the Advent Box. Each box is filled, as per tradition, with 24 surprises to help you count your way down to Christmas. Some are a bit wacky, some are handmade, some help you cope with the stresses of the festive countdown and of course, most are just plain indulgence. I'm very pleased with the interest I've received from people close to me since I showed those around last week, and who knows, putting those boxes together may become more than a hobby some day? Throughout December I will let you know what the recipients enjoyed for their daily surprises.
As for me, well, you know how much of a sucker I am for cute advent calendars (check out last year's and the year before). I hope to get mine just in the nick of time when I visit a certain famous place in a few days' time. More on that later.

Cette année le compte à rebours de N a commencé il y a une éternité quand je me suis mise à emballer, emballer, et encore emballer des petits cadeaux pour mes boîtes de l'Avent.
J'en avais déjà fait pour ma famille l'année dernière et elles avaient eu beaucoup de succès. Au début de l'automne j'ai commencé à fouiner dans les magasins, reniflé les bonnes affaires, importé quelques trucs de France, et au bout du compte, la voilà...ma Boîte de l'Avent édition 2014. Chacune contient, comme le veut la tradition, 24 surprises pour aider à compter à rebours jusqu'à Noël. Certaines sont un peu fofolles, ceratines faites main, d'autres sont là pour vous aider à gerer le stress de la période festive, et bien sûr, la plupart sont pure gourmandise. Je suis très contente de l'intérêt qu'elles ont suscité autour de moi depuis que je les ai montrées la semaine dernière, et qui sait, peut-être qu'un jour ça deviendra plus qu'un simple hobby? Pendant le mois de décembre je vous montrerai ce que les destinataires ont reçu chaque jour.
Quant à moi, eh bien, vous savez mon faible pour les jolis calendriers de l'avent (voyez ceux de l'année dernière et de l'année précédente). J'espère me prendre le mien juste à la derniere minute quand je me rendrai dans un certain endroit dans quelques jours. Je vous raconte très vite.

no time to explain

No time to explain where the past three weeks have gone. Not much has happened and yet many memories come to mind of autumnal walks in the park, family visits, and endless preparations for my Christmas projects. More on that in the next few days if all goes well, not that I mean to be cryptic or anything but it's finally all coming together and I hope it will work out the way I'd like it to.

Pas le temps d'expliquer où les trois dernières semaines sont passées. Il ne s'est pas passé grand-chose et pourtant plein de souvenirs de promenades automnales, de visites de nos parents, et de préparations pour mes projets de Noël me viennent à l'esprit quand j'y pense. Je vous en dirai plus dans les prochains jours si tout va bien, pas que je veuille faire planer le mystère mais je boucle tout en ce moment et je voudrais que ça se passe comme je veux.

a shirt

At the start of the summer I went on a course with a couple of colleagues to learn how to make a shirt. We were still hype from our in-house Sewing Bee competition, and decided a shirt would be an appropriate challenge to set ourselves.
In the end it was quite difficult I guess, especially dealing with the collar. That said, things always go smoother with the help of a professional, girly chat and a nice cuppa.
The course was spread into two sessions of three hours each, and although we didn't really have a break, none of the shirts were finished in time. I remember coming home that night and thinking: "right, I'll finish this at the weekend and wear it straight away". But...well, the world cup was on at the time (not that I'm an avid watcher but there was the odd match I might have seen)...and then Baby got chicken pox when the holiday started, and then...and then.
A couple of weeks ago I thought it was really high time to finish the shirt (it only needed the sleeves attaching and the buttonholes) and got the job done in just an hour. Verdict? I'm loving wearing it and might just try and make another one if I can remember the intricate collar business enough.

Au début de l'été j'ai fait un stage avec deux de mes collègues pour apprendre à faire un chemisier. On était toutes enjouées après notre compet' decouture du mois précédent, et on s'est dit qu'un chemisier serait un bon défi à notre niveau.
En fin de compte c'était assez difficile, surtout le col. Cela dit, tout va toujours mieux quand on a l'aide d'une professionnelle, des ragots à se raconter et une bonne tasse de thé.
Le stage était en deux fois trois heures, et bien qu'on n'ait pas arrêté, aucun des chemisiers n'a été fini a temps. Je me souviens être rentrée à la maison et m'être dit " bon, je le finis ce weekend et je le porterai la semaine prochaine". Mais voilà...ben, y'avait la coupe du monde à l'époque (pas que je sois fan, mais j'ai quand même jeté un oeil de temps à autre)...et puis Bébé a eu la varicelle dès que les vacances ont commencé, et puis...et puis...
Il y a une quinzaine je me suis dit qu'il serait franchement temps de finir ce chemisier (il ne restait plus que les manches à attacher et les boutonnières à faire) et je l'ai fini en une heure. Verdicte? j'adore le porter et vais peut-être même me lancer et en faire un autre si je me rappelle tous les détails sur le fameux col.

in the mood for autumn

Today for the first time in a fortnight we stayed home instead of going for our usual late afternoon walk. I fancied a good old crumble, and it was ever so slightly windy. So why not stay in, bake a little, indulge in a glass of wine while watching the Great British bake Off, cover my feet in the fleece blanket I keep by the sofa, and gently dream that Autumn will continue to be soft and sweet?

Aujourd'hui pour la première fois depuis une quinzaine nous sommes restés à la maison au lieu de sortir faire notre promenade quotidienne de fin d'après-midi. J'avais envie d'un bon vieux crumble, et en plus il y avait un léger vent. Alors pourquoi ne pas rester chez soi, cuisiner un peu, se faire plaisir avec un verre de vin en regardant le Great British bake Off, avec mes pieds sous la couverture polaire que je garde toujours près du canapé, et rêver doucement  à ce que l'automne reste doux et calme comme il l'a été jusqu'à maintenant?
